Volkswagen is preparing for a big change with the release of the new VW ID. Cross, an all-electric SUV that could redefine the brand’s future. Think of it as an electric version of the T-Cross, compact on the outside but surprisingly spacious on the inside. More importantly, it brings back core VW values that many customers have missed. Simple German design, high-quality materials and real buttons instead of touch sliders or piano-black plastic.

The exterior keeps things clean and recognizable, with a continuous light strip at the front, illuminated VW badge and sleek matrix LED headlamps. The rear also gets a full-width light bar and animated indicators. Dimensionally, it’s about 4.16 meters long (T-Cross size), but comes with a longer wheelbase for better interior space. Wheel options will go up to 20 inches, while the prototype featured a 21-inch design for show purposes.

In terms of power, the ID. Cross offers up to 211 hp front-wheel drive, two battery options (around 38 kWh and 56 kWh), and a range of over 400 km (250 miles) in ideal conditions. DC fast charging from 10-80% will take around 20-25 minutes, making it possible to make longer trips, although this SUV is designed primarily for city use. Top speed is around 175 km/h (110 mph).

You’ll notice the difference immediately as soon as you step inside. Gone are the glossy plastics and replaced with fabric, leatherette, and metal finishes. Volkswagen listened to customer feedback and brought back physical buttons for climate control, steering wheel functions, and volume knobs. The 13-inch infotainment system is within easy reach, paired with digital instruments and a clean, modern layout. The center console also gets a ventilated wireless charging pad, customizable ambient lighting, and fun details like play/pause pedals and plant holders.

The seats and dashboard are made using environmentally friendly materials, with options like fabric, leather, and microfiber. Despite being a small SUV, the cabin feels like a living room – bright, comfortable, and spacious enough for four tall adults. The rear bench might sit a little low, but there’s still plenty of legroom and headroom. Cargo space is also practical, offering 450 liters of boot capacity, which can be expanded by folding the seats flat, plus smart storage under the floor. Towing capacity is up to 1.2 tons, and you can even mount an e-bike thanks to a 75 kg coupling.

Prices are expected to start around €28,000 (₹25.2 lakh in india)for the small-battery version, but most buyers will opt for the larger battery, which with options will bring the price closer to €38,000 – 40,000( ₹34.2 lakh-₹36 lakh in india). While not cheap, leasing and company car deals will make it even more attractive.

The VW ID. Cross is a statement that it is more than just another electric SUV. Volkswagen is showing that it has listened to its customers and is returning to the brand’s strengths: simple design, practicality and everyday usability. The model also sets the stage for future small EVs such as the upcoming ID. Polo (2026) and ID. UP (2027).
