The newest entry in Mahindra’s electric SUV lineup, the Mahindra XEV 9S, has been unveiled. And if the design looks familiar, that’s because the 9S is basically the all-electric equivalent of the XUV700, but built on Mahindra’s dedicated INGLO EV platform. This article takes a first look at the car to tell you about its design, features, performance and range, and why it has been priced so aggressively.
Price and Variants of Mahindra XEV 9S
Mahindra has surprised everyone with the competitive pricing of the XEV 9S.
59 kWh (Pack 1 above): ₹19.95 lakh
79 kWh (Pack 3 above): ₹29.45 lakh
This makes it almost ₹2 lakh cheaper than the XEV9E for similar configurations, giving the 9S a huge value advantage.
Exterior design: Familiar yet fresh
From the front, the XEV 9S looks similar to the XEV9E, but key details set it apart.
- The LED light bar is thicker, giving the SUV a stronger visual identity.
- Mahindra’s illuminated Infinity logo sits below in a hidden panel.
- The bonnet opens to reveal a 150-litre boot, which offers more space for extra luggage.
From the side, gloss-black elements reflect the design language of Mahindra’s new EVs. The 9S gets 18-inch alloy wheels, while the more premium 9E offers 19- and 20-inch options. Ground clearance is 219 mm, and while both SUVs share the INGLO underpinnings, the 9S has a slightly shorter wheelbase to accommodate the XUV700’s body structure.
At the rear, the tail-lamp cluster features hidden LEDs and stylish glitter-like lighting elements. More glossy black elements and clean surfaces help differentiate it from the XUV700.
Boot Space
The tailgate is manual, and with all the seats up, usable luggage space is limited, enough for two small soft bags. However, folding the third row frees up 500 litres, which makes the boot much more practical. Mahindra has also provided a spare wheel under the floor.
Interior and Features
Inside the cabin, the XEV 9S looks similar to the XEV9E. The big highlight is that it gets a triple 12.3-inch display layout:
- Digital instrument cluster
- Central touchscreen
- Passenger display
While the XEV 9S is packed with features, the UI can be overwhelming, and some functions, such as seat ventilation, still reside in touch menus rather than physical buttons.
The quality is solid with premium materials, though there are scratchy plastics underneath. The new two-spoke steering wheel features an illuminated Infinity logo, and paddle-style selectors operate the region level and boost mode.
Front seats
The front seats are large, well-cushioned, ventilated, and electrically adjustable. However, the passenger display has no privacy filter, so it is visible to the driver.
Second-row experience
The middle row remains a strong point, being spacious, airy and comfortable.
- Sliding and reclining seats
- Rear seat ventilation
- 65W fast charging
- Wireless charging pads
- Sunshades
- A “bring your own device” mount for using a tablet as an entertainment screen
- A panoramic sunroof adds to the sense of space
Power-adjustment and Boss Mode for the left rear seat make it driver-friendly.

Third-row comfort
Access to the third row has been improved thanks to one-touch tumble seats and a long sliding range. Space is still best suited for average-height adults or children. The adjustable second row allows flexibility to balance legroom across all three rows.
Battery Options, Range & Performance
The XEV 9S uses an LFP battery and is the first Mahindra EV to offer three pack sizes
| Battery Pack | Certified Range |
|---|---|
| 59 kWh | 521 km |
| 70 kWh | 600 km |
| 79 kWh | 679 km |
All variants of the XEV use a rear-mounted motor, which sends power to the rear wheels. The 380 Nm of torque remains the same, but the power output varies:
- 59 kWh: 231 hp
- 70 kWh: 245 hp
- 79 kWh: 286 hp
Charging
- 7.2 kW AC and 11.2 kW AC options
- Up to 180 kW DC fast charging
- 20–80% in 20 minutes (with a 180 kW charger)
Mahindra is also building its own DC fast-charging network, and has already launched one.
