In a major step to promote road safety, the government in June 2025 approved new rules that made anti-lock braking system (ABS) and BIS-certified helmets – one for the driver and one for the passenger – mandatory for all new two-wheelers sold from January 1, 2026.

ABS will be mandatory on all bikes and scooters, regardless of engine size. The ABS system prevents the wheels from locking during emergency braking and provides grip, which reduces the risk of falls and accidents.

ABS is a proven life-saver in emergencies: ABS prevents wheel slippage and provides control, which helps the driver maintain control during hard braking.

When both the driver and the pillion rider wear helmets while riding, it increases their safety. The use of both ABS and helmets increases the safety of both the rider and the passenger.

Manufacturers and dealers have been given a deadline of January 1, 2026, to introduce ABS features in all two-wheeler segments.
It will now be mandatory for dealers to carry two certified helmets at the point of sale.

These two safety features will also see a significant reduction in accidents and road deaths related to two-wheelers on Indian roads.
