The Indian EV market is exploding with new launches one after the other, and the latest arrival is Mahindra’s new XEV 9S (XEV9S), which is essentially an electric version of the popular XUV700. Interestingly, the launch came just two days after Tata launched the Harrier EV, putting both the SUVs in direct and indirect competition in the ₹20-30 lakh segment.
Mahindra has approached the XEV 9S with a more luxury-centric, comfort-centric, family-friendly philosophy, while Tata positions the Harrier EV as a performance-centric, lifestyle-centric, 4×4 capable SUV. This difference alone sets off an exciting battle between the two.
Launch Highlights and Mahindra’s Vision
At the launch event, Mahindra executives highlighted the success of their previous electric SUVs and emphasized how customer feedback has shaped the XEV 9S. Many existing owners wanted a larger, more premium, more powerful 7-seater electric SUV, and the 9S is Mahindra’s answer.
The XEV 9S is built on the INGLO platform, the same architecture used in their other EVs, the XEV 9S promises:
- Fast charging: 20-80% in 20 minutes with Mahindra’s fast charger
- Advanced technology with “MAYA” – Mahindra’s AI ecosystem
- Strong focus on space, which Mahindra calls “new luxury”, especially in metro cities
Performance, Range and Drive Dynamics
The XEV 9S gets a single rear-mounted motor and is available only in RWD (4×2), a key difference compared to the Harrier EV, which offers a proper AWD (4×4) option.
Powertrain options
- 220 hp, 380 Nm
- 280 hp, 380 Nm
Mahindra claims a 0-100 km/h time of around 7 seconds, making it the fastest 7-seater EV under ₹70 lakh.
Range (claimed)
Mahindra tested the EV across India, from the cold of Ladakh to the heat of Rajasthan:
- Goa: ~534 km
- Jaipur / Delhi: ~480 km
This variation could be due to weather, terrain and driving patterns.
Ride and Handling
Top variants feature:
- Adaptive suspension
- 5-link rear suspension
- Best-in-segment 220 mm ground clearance
Mahindra also boasts the lowest wheel-to-seat vibration, ensuring a very comfortable ride.
Design and Interiors
The XEV 9S retains the familiar silhouette of the XUV700 but has undergone several design changes.
Exterior
- New connected LED headlights
- Subtle bumper redesign
- Premium glossy cladding
- New C-shaped LED tail-lamps
- Blacked-out rear housing and sporty diffuser

Variant and Price Analysis
Mahindra has divided the variants into three main packs:
1. Pack One Above (Value for Money Kings)
- Price: ₹19.95 lakh (59 kWh)
- Price: ₹21.95 lakh (79 kWh)
- Competitor: Tata Harrier EV Base – ₹21.5 lakh
✔ Better features
✔ Better performance
✔ Cheaper than Harrier EV
✔ 7 seats
These variants offer the best value and are likely to appeal to most buyers.
2. Pack Two Above (Mid Premium Segment)
- 70 kWh / 79 kWh
- 220–280 hp
- Features like Boss Mode, ventilated seats, additional app features added
Compared to Harrier EV Fearless (65kWh/75kWh):
- Mahindra offers a larger battery at almost the same price
- All premium features included
Again, Mahindra wins on range + space + features.
3. Pack Three Above (Top-end Premium)
- Only 79 kWh battery
- Adaptive suspension
- Level 2+ ADAS
- Sliding second row, third-row USB-C port
- Price: ₹27.35 lakh
Competitor: Harrier EV Empowered+ (75 kWh) – ₹27.5 lakh
The catch?
With an additional cost of just ₹1.5 lakh, Tata offers a proper 4×4 AWD system, making the Harrier EV more viable for enthusiasts and adventure buyers.
So in the top-end segment, Tata wins.
4. Pack Three Above (Top+) – Feature Overloaded Variant
- Price: ₹29.45 lakh
- Features like HUD, in-cabin camera, 360° safe vision, interior video monitoring, etc. are available.
But at the same price, the AWD variant of the Harrier EV offers more performance, more capability and much better drivability. So this variant is not value for money.
Which car should you buy?
Buy the Mahindra XEV 9S if you want:
- Offers the best value for money.
- Truly a 7-seater EV.
- Spacious cabin exudes space.
- Focuses on luxury + comfort.
- Offers a large battery at a low price.
Best picks
✔ Pack One Above (59/79 kWh)
✔ Pack Two Above (70 kWh)
Buy the Tata Harrier EV if you want:
- A proper 4×4 AWD SUV.
- Sporty, robust, performance-friendly SUV
- Offers excellent off-roading capabilities.
- Sharp design and strong presence on the road.
Best pick
✔ Harrier EV AWD (costs an additional ₹1.5 lakh)
Final Verdict
Mahindra has absolutely nailed the XEV 9S in terms of price, space and family-friendly features. The lower and mid-range variants are truly segment killers. But the lack of an all-wheel drive option in the upper variants weakens its appeal against the more capable Harrier EV.
If value and practicality are important to you, the XEV 9S could be the right option for you. And if
if performance and true SUV capability are important to you, the Harrier EV is a better option.
